“I want to share with this important video from Dr Sam Mucheru, the first Diabetologist in Kenya from Merck Foundation Alumni. He was the Merck Diabetes Award winner of 2016, The award was one year online Post Graduate Diploma in Diabetes Management with University of South Wales, UK. Do you know what he has done after his graduation?!

He established a Diabetes clinic in Mombasa, Kenya. Through this clinic which he runs himself, he will be able to utilize the acquired skills and knowledge from the diploma to help his patients and community. He is the first but not the last, we are waiting for 50 winners who enrolled in the one year diabetes diploma or cardiovascular preventive medicine diploma to graduate and establish their Diabetes or Hypertension clinics in more than 25 countries from Africa and Asia, not in the capitals but in other cities and villages across each country. Many blue points of Diabetes care across the two continents.

Enjoy watching Dr. Sam’s video and stay tuned to witness how we realize the Merck foundation vision to establish a platform of Diabetes and Hypertension experts across the two continents. We strongly believe this is the right strategy to improve access to health."

Dr Rasha Kelej
CEO of Merck Foundation

"The Merck Diabetes and Hypertension Award was a Post Graduate Diploma in Diabetes Management with University of South Wales, UK - a 1 year post graduate diploma that is delivered online. Its 100% online and It equipped me with lot of knowledge that I apply now in the diabetes clinic I established in Mombasa. The reason why I was trusted to run this clinic is because of the knowledge I acquired from this diploma. I find myself much more confident in dealing with them. Had I not done the diploma I probably would not be as confident as I am now. So, the Ministry of Health through the Kenya Medical practitioner and diabetology support has recognized my diploma and has actually recognized me as a Diabetes expert with the board so now I am known as Diabetologist within my country Kenya. When the prevalence is on the rise we need more doctors, who are skilled in these diseases.

I would ask my colleagues to apply, that is the future of the medicine. By winning Merck Diabetes and Hypertension Award that was awarded to me through the Merck Foundation I have seen myself develop as a doctor. I have seen myself increasingly become more knowledgeable and most keen as I see the patient. My word is to give big big thank you. No words can describe the appreciation that I have for Merck Foundation for doing that for Africa and Asia building capacity and ultimately helping the patients and taking care of them. So, Merck Foundation you are a big blessing to our continent and to our country Kenya.”

Dr Sam Mucheru Diabetologist, Kenya.
